Origin
The Adenium Obesum Pink Star, commonly known as the Desert Rose, is a common plant species that originally hails from the sunny regions of Eastern and Southern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The climate in these areas is characterised by high temperatures and little rainfall, which has forced the plant to adapt to arid conditions.
Characteristics
The Adenium Obesum Pink Star is distinctive for its striking pink flowers, which are grouped in star formations, hence the plant's name. The plant has a succulent character, which means it can store a lot of water in its trunk and engorged base. The height of the plant is variable, but under optimal conditions, it can grow into a small shrub of about one meter high.
Care
Given its origin in dry, warm areas, the Adenium Obesum Pink Star requires a lot of light and needs to be protected from cold and frost. Its water needs are low, with watering only needed once every few weeks. Overwatering can result in root rot and should be avoided. The plant can be encouraged to bloom by fertilising it in early spring with a phosphorus-rich fertiliser. It's crucial to allow the plant to dry out between watering, to prevent root rot. For optimum growth conditions, it is recommended to plant the Adenium in well-draining soil.
