Origin
The Begonia Rex Red Jive, also known as King Begonia, originally comes from the tropical south of Asia. This region is characterized by its humid and warm climates, an environment in which this plant can thrive excellently. Additionally, this plant is extensively cultivated in North America and Europe, for indoor use as well as in garden centres.
Characteristics
The Begonia Rex Red Jive is a tropical houseplant known for its distinctive leaves. The leaves have a characteristic pattern with red, purple, and green colours that vividly contrast against the slightly lighter background. The plant can reach a height of up to 35 centimetres and grows all year round. The Begonia seldom blooms, which is why it is primarily appreciated for its unique leaves.
Care
Begonia Rex Red Jive requires a well-draining soil and a warm, humid environment to grow. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it may burn the leaves, but bright, indirect light is needed for the best colour. Consistent watering is also necessary, but overwatering can cause root rot, so the soil should almost completely dry out in between watering. During the winter months, watering can be reduced. The plant also needs regular fertilisation, ideally every month during the growing period.
