Origin
The Guzmania 'Candy' is an exotic plant species originating from Central and South America, more specifically the warm, humid rainforests of these regions. This plant belongs to the family of Bromeliaceae, which the pineapple plant also belongs to. The Guzmania 'Candy' is named after Anastasio Guzman, a Spanish naturalistic explorer who discovered numerous plant species in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Characteristics
Distinctive features of the Guzmania 'Candy' are her long, narrow, bright green leaves that grow from a central rosette. At the end of the stems, beautiful, star-shaped flowers in bright colours appear, ranging from red to orange and yellow. As the plant is epiphytic in nature, it grows in the wild on decayed tree trunks or among rocks. The plant does not have an extensive root system, but primarily obtains its nutrients from the rainwater that remains in its leaf rosettes.
Care
For the optimal care of the Guzmania 'Candy', a light to semi-shady location is advisable, but it cannot withstand direct sunlight. The plant likes high humidity, so mimicking its natural rainforest environment with regular misting is therefore beneficial. Watering the plant is best done with lime-free water in the leaf rosette, not in the potting soil. The temperature in which the plant thrives best, is between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius.
