Origin
The Euphorbia pulcherrima Christmas Eve, better known as the poinsettia, has its origin in Central America. More specifically, the plant is considered native to Mexico and Guatemala, where it thrives in the humid cloud forests. The Aztecs appreciated the plant for its striking red colour, which they associated with purity. It was not until the 19th century that the poinsettia was introduced to Europe, where it has since become a popular houseplant, mainly during the Christmas period.

The Euphorbia pulcherrima Christmas Eve is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 4 meters high in nature, although it usually stays smaller in culture. The plant is known for its striking bracts that turn red in winter, giving the plant its association with Christmas. However, it is not the flowers, but these coloured leaves that attract attention. The actual flowers of the plant are small and yellow, often overlooked due to the stunning red bracts.

Care
When caring for the Euphorbia pulcherrima Christmas Eve, it's important to keep its tropical origin in mind. The plant prefers warm temperatures between 16 and 22 degrees Celsius. Overwatering should be avoided, the soil may slightly dry out between watering. The plant appreciates being placed in a light location but does not tolerate full sun. To regain the poinsettia's red colour next year, it's important to cut back the plant after flowering in the spring and to place the plant in darkness for several weeks in the autumn.
