Origin
The Clivia Miniata, often recognised as the Kaffir Lily, is a perennial herb that originates from the forests of South Africa. This plant is a member of the Amaryllidaceae family and was first scientifically described in 1828 by botanist John Lindley. During the Victorian era, it was a popular houseplant, highly esteemed for its resilience and vibrant, conspicuous flowers.

Characteristics
The Clivia Miniata is a robust, evergreen plant that can reach heights of 45 to 60 cm. This plant is distinctive for its broad, dark green leaves and bright, orange to red umbrella-shaped flowers. These flowers, which typically bloom in the late winter or early spring, are followed by bright red berries that remain on the plant for several months. The plant is a bulbous and does not produce protruding stems.

Care
Clivias require minimal care and are exceptionally frost resistant, making them suitable for indoor cultivation. They prefer well-drained soil and should be watered when the top 3 centimetres of the soil becomes dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Although they naturally grow beneath a canopy of trees and are thus accustomed to shade, they are best situated indoors in a location with bright, indirect light. They also require a certain cooling period in order to bloom. During this dormant period, typically initiated in the autumn, watering is minimised and the plant is relocated to a cool, dark area.
