Origin
The Selaginella apoda, also known as meadow spikemoss, originally comes from the eastern and southern regions of the United States. This plant can be found in many different natural environments, ranging from swamps to forests. Despite its American roots, the Selaginella apoda is now also cultivated in gardens and greenhouses around the world.

Characteristics
The Selaginella apoda is a low-growing, herbaceous fern plant that typically grows in a spreading mat. The plant carries small, needle-like leaves and produces brown-green cone-shaped cones that play an important role in reproduction. Unique to this plant is that it belongs to the small group of spikemosses, which differs from the more well-known moss by their vascular system that ensures the transport of water and nutrients.

Care
For proper care of the Selaginella apoda, it is important to maintain high humidity and indirect sunlight, which is comparable to its natural swamp environment. The soil should be well-drained, yet kept moist. To survive in drier conditions, the Selaginella apoda can go into a dormant state in which it curls its leaves, but it will recover if it receives enough water again.
