Origin
The Stephanotis floribunda, also known as the Madagascar Jasmine, is a tropical plant native to Madagascar. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family and was introduced to Europe in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Stephanotis floribunda is a climbing plant, which is notable for its robust, glossy leaves and the striking white flowers, which take on a star or funnel shape. It primarily blooms in the summer. The flowers have an intensely sweet scent, frequently associated with exotic and tropical areas. In full bloom, this plant also can produce small fruits, however, this is extremely rare when grown indoors.
Care
For optimal growth and bloom of the Stephanotis floribunda, it is crucial that it is placed in a well-lit spot, out of direct sunlight. The plant prefers warmer temperatures, ranging between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, but cannot tolerate temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Adequate water and high humidity are also important. However, it is vital to prevent the plant from standing in stagnant water, as it can cause root rot. In the winter, the Stephanotis floribunda enters a dormant period in which less water is needed. Nutrients are best provided during the growth phase in spring and summer. Pruning the plant after the last frost is recommended to stimulate new growth.
