Origin
The Juniperus x pfitzeriana 'Old Gold', also known as the 'Old Gold' Juniper, is a conifer from the cypress family. This plant was first cultivated and bred in the United States, but it originates from the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere.
Characteristics
The 'Old Gold' is distinguished by its compact growth habit and brightly coloured needles. These needles are golden yellow in colour in the spring and summer, but take on a bronze-like hue in the winter. The eventual height of the plant is usually between 60 and 90 centimetres, with the plant typically becoming wider than it is tall. The 'Old Gold' is a hardy plant, which can cope well with severe frost.
Care
The 'Old Gold' requires little care after planting. It grows best in full sun or partial shade, in well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil. An annual addition of compost can help to maintain soil fertility. Pruning is not necessary, as the plant retains its shape well, but it can be useful to remove dead or damaged wood. Since the 'Old Gold' is drought-resistant, regular watering is only required during prolonged periods of drought.
