Origin
The Rhododendron (T) Cherry Kiss originates from Asia and is primarily found in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, Southeast Asia and North America. The Rhododendron genus is incredibly diverse, with over 1,000 different species. The name Cherry Kiss is derived from the unique bright red colour of the flowers, reminiscent of ripe cherries.
Characteristics
The Rhododendron (T) Cherry Kiss is an evergreen shrub with a compact growth habit, eventually reaching a height of approximately 1.5 metres. The leaves are dark-green and glossy, contrasting beautifully against the red colour of the flowers. The flowers of this species are particularly striking: they are a deep red, almost cherry-coloured, and have a white edge. They appear in clusters in late spring, thus creating an impressive colour spectacle.
Care
The Rhododendron (T) Cherry Kiss is best planted in semi-shade to full sun, and prefers a well-draining, acidic soil. The plant despises lime, so adding garden peat or rhododendron soil when planting encourages growth. During a dry summer, it is important to provide plenty of water. After blooming, the plant can be lightly pruned to promote dense growth. Like other Rhododendrons, this species is winter-hardy, but can be sensitive to late frosts in the spring.
