Origin
The Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Purpureus', also known as the Purple Osmanthus, originates from the Asian continent. Its natural habitat is found in countries like China and Japan. It is fond of woodland environments and naturally grows on forest slopes and shrubberies.
Characteristics
The Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Purpureus' is an evergreen shrub characterized by its dark green, serrated leaves that have a characteristic leathery texture. In the spring and summer, the plant bears small, fragrant flowers that can be white to creamy in colour. These flowers then develop into blue-black berries in the autumn. The plant has a compact growth habit and can grow up to 3 meters high.
Care
When caring for the Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Purpureus', account should be taken of its preference for well-draining soil. It is a plant that can tolerate full sun to half-shade, but needs protection against harsh, cold winds. In the spring, it is advised to feed the plant once a year with a general fertiliser.
