Origin
The Cortaderia selloana 'Splendid Star', commonly known as Pampas Grass, has its origin in the grasslands of South America, particularly in Argentina and Brazil. It was around the 19th century that this plant was first introduced to Europe, where it rapidly gained popularity due to its striking appearance and high tolerance for varying climatic conditions.
Characteristics
The Cortaderia selloana 'Splendid Star' is a compact, exceptionally graceful variant of the well-known Pampas Grass. This plant is distinguished by its evergreen, narrow-leafed foliage with golden-yellow stripes. The plant is characterised by its upright growth habit and can reach a height of 1.2 metres. From August to October, the plant produces plume-like flowering panicles, which vary in colour from cream-white to light pink.
Care
Full sun and well-drained soil are essential for the care of the Cortaderia selloana 'Splendid Star'. The plant is best planted in spring or autumn. It is advisable to fertilise the plant annually to promote growth and flowering. Although the plant is drought tolerant, regular watering during dry periods is necessary. Winter protection may be required in colder climates to protect the plant from frost.
