Origin
The Equisetum hyemale, also known as the winter-hardy horsetail, is a plant species that belongs to the only remaining family of the Equisetopsida class. This plant species has its origin in the temperate zones of North America, Europe and Asia. In the wild, it typically grows in wet habitats such as swamps and along the banks of streams.
Characteristics
The Equisetum hyemale is an evergreen, frost-hardy plant that can grow up to approximately 1.2 metres high. The plant is known for its upright, hollow stems that have a unique, rough texture due to their high silicon content. Notable are the dark green stems that appear in the spring and remain until deep in winter.
Care
The Equisetum hyemale is a robust plant requiring little maintenance. It grows best in moist soil and full sun to partial shade. Regular watering is crucial to support their growth, but they are also relatively drought resistant. Due to the plant's aggressive spreading, it may be necessary to control the growth by means of a barrier in the ground or by growing it in containers.
