Origin
Taxus baccata 'Summergold' is a cultivar of Taxus baccata, which is naturally found in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and the west of Asia. The 'Summergold' originates from selective breeding methods aimed at improving certain characteristics of the parent plant. Unlike the standard Taxus baccata, 'Summergold' has been specifically bred for its striking foliage colour.
Characteristics
Taxus baccata 'Summergold' is a small to medium-sized, evergreen shrub with gold to yellow needles in the summer, which change to bronze in cold months. The plant has a compact growth and forms a tight, dense hedge over time. The plant can reach a height of up to 150 cm. 'Summergold' produces red, berry-like fruits, however only when both female and male plants are present.
Care
Taxus baccata 'Summergold' can grow in full sun to partial shade. The plant is tolerant to many soil types, but prefers well-draining soil. Pruning to maintain the shape should ideally be done in the early spring before the new growth. 'Summergold' has a moderate water need and should receive extra water during periods of drought. Despite its resilience, care should be taken with extreme weather conditions such as hard frost and strong wind.
