Origin
The Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star', also known as the blue juniper, has its origin in the Himalayas and other mountainous areas in Asia. It is a plant that has adapted over thousands of years to the challenging conditions of a rough and often inhospitable alpine landscape. As a result, it is an extremely strong species that can withstand many types of weather.
Characteristics
Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star' is a dwarf conifer, recognised by its tight compact form and intense blue needles. The 'Blue Star' distinguishes itself with its gracefulness and thanks to its size - reaching only 75 cm at full maturity - it fits easily in any garden. This compact, shrubby juniper grows slowly and can last for decades without the need for pruning. In spring, the 'Blue Star' produces small blue-green berries, which ripen in late autumn.
Care
The Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star' thrives best in full sun and well-draining soil. The plant is very hardy and can cope with both drought and cool temperatures. In terms of maintenance, this plant requires little effort: pruning is not necessary unless a specific form needs to be cultivated. Watering in dry periods is recommended, but the juniper can also go for a longer period without extra water. Thanks to its strong nature, the 'Blue Star' is not very susceptible to diseases and pests.
