Origin
The Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety', also known as the Spindle Tree, is a native plant in East Asia. The species is named after the Scottish plant collector Robert Fortune who discovered this plant in China in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The 'Emerald Gaiety' is an evergreen, creeping shrub that clings to supporting surfaces. It is known for its white-bordered, dark green leaves that turn pink in cold weather conditions. The shrub is dense and bushy, usually reaching a height and width of about 1.5 metres. Small, inconspicuous green flowers appear in late spring and summer.
Care
Ensure well-drained soil and place the plant in partial shade to full sun for the best growth results. Regular pruning will help keep the plant compact and tidy. Although this shrub is drought-tolerant, water it regularly during dry periods for optimal growth. Fertilising is not necessary but can stimulate growth. Protection in extremely cold winters is recommended.
