Origin
The Nandina domestica Twilight, also known as heavenly bamboo, has its origins in East Asia. This evergreen plant naturally occurs in Japan, China, and India. The species belongs to the Berberidaceae family. Despite its name, the plant is not truly a bamboo species, but does somewhat resemble it in appearance.
Characteristics
The Nandina domestica Twilight is characterised by its striking, half green-half white leaves. This plant has a bushy growth habit and can grow up to a maximum height of 1.5 meters. In spring and summer, the Nandina produces small white flowers that later turn into red berries. The berries often remain on the plant during the winter, providing an attractive food source for birds.
Care
The Nandina domestica Twilight requires little maintenance and is therefore well suited for both beginner and experienced gardeners. The plant prefers a sunny to semi-shady location and well-drained soil. The plant is frost hardy, but it is best to protect it with insulating material such as straw during severe winters. Watering is necessary in dry periods, especially during the growth phase. Pruning can be done after flowering, to maintain the shape of the plant.
