Origin
The Festuca glauca 'Golden Toupee' originates from the Mediterranean region in Southern Europe. This strong and durable plant is adapted to the climate there and can grow well in various conditions. You can encounter it in the Netherlands as well as in other parts of Europe. It is one of the many species from the larger grass genus, known as Festuca.
Characteristics
This plant is known for its bright yellow leaves, which form a beautiful contrast against its steel-blue stems. The Festuca glauca 'Golden Toupee' usually grows between 20 to 30 centimetres tall and its leaves are long, needle-like, and slightly curved. In spring and summer, the plant blooms with subtle blue-green flower spikes. This sturdy and upright perennial ornamental grass has a compact growth habit, meaning it spreads upwards rather than sideways.
Care
The care of the Festuca glauca 'Golden Toupee' is relatively straightforward. This plant requires full sun and well-draining soil in order to thrive. The soil should be moderately fertile, not particularly rich. Excessive feeding can lead to lush growth that may disrupt the plant's neat shape. It is advisable to prune this plant in early spring to promote its health and compact growth.
