Origin
The Campanula portenschlagiana Porto, also known as the Dalmatian bellflower, is indigenous to the Dalmatian region of Croatia. The plant is named after the botanist Friedrich Portenschlag who is recognised for his contribution to the botanical world.
Characteristics
The Campanula portenschlagiana Porto is distinguished by its blue-purple flowers shaped like a star or bell which bloom profusely during the summer months. The plant has a compact growth habit with dark green, heart-shaped leaves. It is a perennial and can grow up to 15 centimetres tall. The plant is perfectly at home on cliffs, in rock gardens and between stone walls where it can spread easily.
Care
For optimal growth and bloom, the Campanula portenschlagiana Porto requires a well-draining, humus-rich soil. The plant thrives best in full sunlight but can also grow in partial shade. Regular watering during the dry season promotes the health of the plant, but overwatering should be avoided as it can cause root rot. In spring, it's recommended to remove aged flowers and leaves to promote new blooming.
