Origin
The Picea pungens 'Oldenburg', better known as the Blue Spruce, has its origin in North America. The name pungens is Latin for 'prickly' and refers to the sharp needles of this spruce. The addition of 'Oldenburg' refers to the German region where this specific cultivar was developed.
Characteristics
What makes the Picea pungens 'Oldenburg' unique, are its distinctive blue-grey needles. The spruce has a cone-shaped growth habit, with a final height of approximately 15 meters. The needles are usually 2-3 cm long and stay on the tree all year round. Particularly impressive are the resin-scented, hanging cones that this tree can carry, which grow between 6 and 12 cm long.
Care
The Picea pungens 'Oldenburg' requires relatively little care. It is highly frost resistant and likes a location in full sun or semi-shade. This spruce also prefers well-drained soil. It is advisable to water the tree regularly, especially for newly planted trees and during dry periods. This spruce does not have specific pruning needs, but can be pruned to maintain or improve the shape.
