Origin
The Photinia x fraseri 'Little Red Robin' is a cultivar of the Photinia, a genus of shrubs from the rose family (Rosaceae). This specific variety was developed in the United States and is named after John Fraser, a Scottish botanist who brought numerous plants to Europe in the 18th century.
Characteristics
The 'Little Red Robin' is a compact, evergreen shrub that is known for its striking red coloured young leaves that later turn to dark green. This shrub has a height and width of 1 to 1.5 metres and produces small, white flowers that grow in clusters in the spring, followed by red to dark purple berries in the autumn. The leaves are oval in shape, glossy and leather-like.
Care
The Photinia x fraseri 'Little Red Robin' requires little maintenance, but performs best in a sunny to semi-shaded location in well-draining, humus-rich soil. During dry periods, the plant may need some extra water. Prune the shrub in the spring to maintain a compact shape and to stimulate the production of the characteristic red young leaves. It is advisable to remove older and weaker branches to keep the plant healthy and vital.
