Strelitzia reginae (zonder bloem)
F00001611
Origin
Ornithogalum thyrsoides, also known as the 'Chincherinchee', is a native plant of South Africa. This bulbous flower plant is from the Asparagaceae family and primarily grows in the open grasslands and heaths of the Western Cape.
Characteristics
This perennial plant is distinctive by its long, sturdy stems that can reach heights of 30 to 50 cm. At the top of each stem bloom between 10 and 20 white, star-shaped flowers, each having a greenish or brownish stripe on the outside of the petals. The flowers are predominantly resilient and durable, making the plant popular with flower farmers.
Care
Ornithogalum thyrsoides requires full sun and well-drained soil to thrive. The bulbs should be planted in the autumn, about 8 cm deep and 10 cm apart. It's important to water the bulbs, especially during dry periods, but excessive water or water saturation can damage the bulbs. The soil ideally should be rich in organic matter, but the plant can also survive in poor soils, provided there is sufficient drainage.
