Origin
The Guzmania 'Switch' originates from Central and South America, where it grows in tropical rainforests. This epiphytic plant, which clings to tree branches instead of rooting in the ground, is part of the Bromeliad family. The genus Guzmania, named after the Spanish naturalist Anastasio Guzman, includes more than 120 known species. The 'Switch' is just one variant, loved for its unique characteristics.
Characteristics
The Guzmania 'Switch' is a striking plant with its red-coloured flower calyxes and green leaves. These leaves grow in a rosette shape, creating a natural water reservoir in the heart of the plant. The actual flowers of the 'Switch' are small and white and are found within the colourful flower calyxes. Most distinctive about this variant are the red-coloured, almost flame-like stems that provide a beautiful contrast with the green leaves.
Care
For the care of a Guzmania 'Switch', it is important to ensure adequate, but indirect sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. The plant needs high humidity, similar to its natural rainforest environment. In terms of watering, the core of the rosette should always be filled with water. However, make sure to refresh this every two weeks to prevent rotting. The 'Switch' does not like cold and draughts, so a spot near a window or door is less suitable. The ideal temperature range is between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius.
