Origin
The Hydrangea paniculata, also known as the panicle hydrangea, finds its origin in East Asia, particularly China, Russia and Japan. It is a deciduous woody plant that often grows in moist forests and river beds in its natural habitat.
Characteristics
The Hydrangea paniculata is remarkable for its large white flowers, which can darken into a light pink colour over time. The flowers are cone-shaped, unlike the round flowers of most other hydrangea species. The plant can reach a height of 1 to 5 metres. The leaves are oval, sharp at the edges and have a grey-green colour.
Care
Hydrangea paniculata prefers moist, rich, well-drained soils and a place in full to semi-shade. Although they are resistant to most pests and diseases, they can be susceptible to leaf spot disease. It is advisable to prune the plant in the late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. A general garden fertiliser or a specialised hydrangea feed will suffice for fertilisation.
