Origin
Araucaria heterophylla is a conifer native to Norfolk Island, located in the Pacific Ocean between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. This species belongs to the Araucariaceae family. The tree grows naturally in coastal areas on volcanic soil. Due to its distinctive appearance, it is cultivated worldwide as an ornamental tree.
Characteristics
Araucaria heterophylla is a slow-growing conifer which can reach impressive heights in the wild, up to 50 to 70 metres. The plant has a characteristic pyramidal form, with horizontal branches arranged in whorls around the trunk. The leaves are soft, needle-shaped and light green when young, turning darker green as they mature. The bark is thin, with a grey, scaly texture. In pot culture, the plant remains compact and the branches retain their typical regular arrangement.
Care
Araucaria heterophylla thrives in ample light and moderate temperatures. Well-draining potting soil is essential to prevent root rot. Water regularly and moderately, ensuring the root ball does not dry out but is never constantly wet. During the growing season, the plant will benefit from a modest amount of fertiliser. Protecting it from draughts and sudden temperature changes encourages healthy growth.
