Origin
The Ficus lyrata, better known as the fiddle leaf fig, originates from the tropical rainforests of West Africa. The plant belongs to the Moraceae family, which includes over 800 species of trees, shrubs and vines. The Ficus lyrata species specifically originates from regions such as Cameroon and Sierra Leone.

Characteristics
An unmistakable characteristic of the Ficus lyrata is its large, light green leaf, which resembles the shape of a fiddle. The dimensions of the shiny leaf often vary between 30 and 50 cm. The plant can reach a height of about 2 metres indoors, but grows up to 12 metres in the wild. The Ficus lyrata is a rapidly growing species and is appreciated for its graceful, architectural shape.

Care
Maintaining the Ficus lyrata requires moderate light conditions and protection from direct sunlight. The plant is best placed in a corner that receives bright light, but is shielded from the harsh midday sun. The plant needs to be watered regularly, one to two times a week, but is quite tolerant of dry conditions. During the winter months, watering should be reduced as this plant is less active in cooler temperatures.
