Origin
Abies koreana originates from the mountainous regions of South Korea, where it grows at altitudes between 1,000 and 1,900 metres. Its natural range is characterised by a humid, cool climate. Abies koreana was introduced to Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Characteristics
Abies koreana is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer that usually does not exceed 10 metres in height when cultivated. The needles are glossy green on the upper side and silvery-white underneath. The upright violet-blue to purple cones, which appear even on young trees, are particularly striking. The tree has a compact growth habit with a conical crown. The bark is smooth and grey.
Care
Abies koreana prefers moist, well-drained and acidic soil. It requires a position in full sun or partial shade. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. Protection from strong winds is recommended to maintain both its shape and health.
