DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Alcea rosea 'Nigra', otherwise known as the 'Black hollyhock', is an ornamental plant originating from Asia. This plant species is one of many in the Alcea genus, a member of the mallow family (Malvaceae). The hollyhock is associated with traditional English cottage gardens, but has spread worldwide due to its distinctive flowers.

Characteristics
The Alcea rosea 'Nigra' is a biennial plant, meaning it grows and flowers over a two year period. This plant is characterised by its notable dark red, almost black flowers, hence the moniker 'Black hollyhock'. The plant can reach heights of two to three metres, and its flowers, which grow on long stems, have a diameter of approximately 10 cm. The blooming period lasts from July through September.

Care
The Black hollyhock requires a sunny location and well-drained soil. Regular watering is required, especially during periods of drought, but care must be taken to avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. Pruning is unnecessary, but the removal of spent blossoms can help stimulate more flowering. Supporting the plant at greater heights may be beneficial to prevent it from collapsing under its own weight, especially in windy conditions.
