Origin
Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' is a cultivar of the genus Ajuga, which belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). This species originates from Europe and parts of Western Asia. The plant is naturally found in moist woodlands, grasslands, and along riverbanks.
Characteristics
Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' is a low-growing, ground-covering perennial. Its leaves are deep purple to almost black and have a glossy, wavy surface. In spring, upright flower stems appear with blue-violet flowers. The plant reaches a height of approximately 10 to 15 centimetres and spreads via runners. The foliage usually remains on the plant throughout winter.
Care
Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' grows best in moist, humus-rich soil. The plant tolerates both sun and partial shade, but develops the most intense leaf colour with sufficient light. Regular removal of spent flowers encourages new leaf growth. The plant is hardy and requires little maintenance.
