Origin
The Acer palmatum 'Red Emperor' is a cultivar of Japanese maple, native to Japan. This variety was selected towards the end of the twentieth century for its unique leaf colour. The species belongs to the Sapindaceae family. Japanese maple is used worldwide in ornamental gardens.

Characteristics
Acer palmatum 'Red Emperor' is distinguished by its deep reddish-purple leaves which retain their colour throughout the growing season. The leaves are deeply lobed with a palmate structure. The shrub or small tree reaches a height of approximately 4 to 5 metres. In autumn, the foliage turns a bright red. The plant has a compact, upright growth habit.

Care
Acer palmatum 'Red Emperor' thrives best in a sheltered position with partial shade or filtered sunlight. Well-drained, slightly acidic soil is required for healthy development. The plant is moderately hardy and requires protection from severe frost. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. Pruning is preferably carried out after leafing to prevent sap bleeding.
