Origin
Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' is a specially selected variety of Japanese maple, originally from Japan, Korea, and parts of China. This cultivar has arisen from crossings within the species Acer palmatum. 'Seiryu' is notable for being one of the few deeply incised-leaf types with an upright growth habit. In Japanese gardens, this species is often used for its elegant appearance.
Characteristics
Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' is distinguished by its finely divided, bright green leaves. In autumn, the foliage turns striking shades of yellow, orange, and red. The shrub has an upright, open growth habit and eventually reaches a height of around three to five metres. The bark is smooth and light grey in colour.
Care
Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' grows best in fertile, well-draining soil. The plant prefers a position in partial shade, sheltered from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. Pruning is best carried out in late winter or early spring.
