Origin
Acer palmatum 'Sumi-nagashi' is a cultivar of the Japanese maple. The species originates from Japan, where various varieties have been cultivated for centuries. 'Sumi-nagashi' was selected from the species Acer palmatum. This variety was further introduced to Europe and North America in the twentieth century. The plant is popular worldwide as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks.

Characteristics
Acer palmatum 'Sumi-nagashi' is characterised by deeply cut, palmate leaves. The leaf colour changes throughout the season, starting dark red in spring, turning reddish-purple in summer. In autumn, the leaves become bright red. The shrub or small tree generally reaches a height of 4 to 6 metres. Its growth habit is upright and fairly open with graceful, slender branches.

Care
Acer palmatum 'Sumi-nagashi' grows best in a sheltered position with partial shade. The soil should be rich in humus, well-draining, and slightly acidic. Regular watering is necessary, especially during warm or dry weather. The plant is moderately hardy and does not tolerate prolonged, strong wind. Pruning is preferably carried out in late summer to prevent bleeding of the sap flow.
