Stem
4BUBUR003
Origin
The Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady', also known as the black olive tree, originates from the tropical regions of the Americas. This tree is particularly prominent in countries such as Mexico, the Caribbean, Florida and Brazil. Due to its aesthetic appeal and the ability to withstand intense heat and drought, the 'Shady Lady' is popular among gardeners and landscape designers worldwide.
Characteristics
As an evergreen tree, the Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' retains its leaves all year round. Distinctive are the small, shiny, oval-shaped leaves that grow very close together, creating a dense and shady canopy. This tree can grow up to a height of 40 feet, with a width ranging from 20 to 30 feet. The flowers of the 'Shady Lady' are extremely subtle and almost invisible, with fruits resembling small black olives.
Care
Given that the 'Shady Lady' is naturally a tropical tree, it thrives best in full sun and well-drained soil. Although it is drought-tolerant, it still needs regular watering for optimum growth. In addition, the tree should be pruned every few years to maintain shape and promote growth. It's important to emphasise that while the tree can withstand some frost, it is not very resistant to prolonged cold temperatures.
