Origin
Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady', also known as the Black Olive tree, originally comes from the warm, tropical areas of Central America and the Caribbean. The species thrives exceptionally well in those coastal regions, where the salty sea breeze and the intense sun have little impact on the tree's growth and development.

Characteristics
With its smooth, grey trunk and dark green, glossy leaves, Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' is a standout plant. This tree can reach a height of 12 to 15 meters and has roughly an oval to round crown. The 'Shady Lady' distinguishes itself with its strong branching and compact growth. It blooms with inconspicuous greenish flowers, followed by small, olive-shaped fruits.

Care
The Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' doesn't demand a lot from its environment, but performs best in a well-draining soil with a neutral pH. Although this tree is drought tolerant, it benefits from regular watering. Protect the tree from frost, as it is not frost hardy. Pruning is essentially not needed, unless the shape of the crown needs to be adjusted. As with every tree species, it is generally recommended to inspect it annually for diseases and pests.
