Origin
The Aloe bainesii, also known as Aloe barberae, comes from South Africa. It is the largest type of aloe that grows in the wild and is named after Mary Elizabeth Barber, a South African botanist and entomologist of British origin. The species is often found in the provinces of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Characteristics
The Aloe bainesii stands out for its size, with a mature height of between 15 and 20 metres. This stemmed plant can be recognized by its characteristic green, smooth leaves that can have a greyish tint. It has thorn-like edges and in the winter the plant produces red-orange flowers that appear in groups at the ends of the branches.
Care
In terms of care, the Aloe bainesii requires full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. It is an extremely drought-tolerant plant that prefers watering during dry periods in the summer. Overwatering should be avoided as it can cause root rot. When pruning, one should be careful with the sharp edges of the leaves. Although the plant can handle some frost, it is recommended to protect it against extreme cold.
