Origin
The Agave americana mediopicta 'Alba', better known as the white mid-striped agave, has its origin in Mexico. Thriving in the harsh climates of the desert areas, this plant has adapted to dry and rough conditions.
Characteristics
The plant is characterised by its broad, fleshy leaves that end in sharp, pointed spikes. Each leaf is light green with a wide creamy-white stripe in the middle, hence the name 'mediopicta Alba', which means 'white middle painted'. The plant can grow up to 1.5 metres high and 2 metres wide in all its glory. The impressive flower stem can reach up to 6 metres high and bears yellow flowers in the summer.
Care
Although the Agave americana mediopicta 'Alba' is a desert plant, it surprisingly requires very little water. A good drainage is, however, essential, as this prevents the roots from standing in water. The plant does well in both full sun and light shade. An important consideration in the care of this plant is protection against frost, as it is not very resistant to cold temperatures.
