Origin
The Opuntia galapageia, also known as the Galapagos prickly pear, is an endemic plant species that comes from the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Over millions of years, this type of cactus has evolved into an exceptional species within the Opuntia family, having perfectly adapted to the unique climate and conditions of this volcanic archipelago.
Characteristics
The Opuntia galapageia is a striking specimen with its typical flattened, fleshy and prickly disk-shaped segments. This evergreen succulent produces yellow to orange flowers that usually bloom in late spring or early summer. It is a tree-like cactus that can grow up to 12 metres high in the open ground. Not only its size, but also its defiant spines are a clear adaptation to the tough and dry climate of its natural habitat.
Care
Despite its original circumstances, the Opuntia galapageia is a relatively straightforward plant to care for. It needs full sun and well-draining soil to grow in. During the winter, you must ensure that this cactus isn't too damp to avoid it rotting. Although the plant is drought resistant, it will need regular watering during the growing season. Be careful though, too much water can cause root rot.
