Origin
The Opuntia jamaicensis 'Ghost' is a cactus species that originates from South America. Specifically, the plant comes from Jamaica, as the name suggests. Due to its striking appearance and adaptability, this cactus has over time conquered the rest of the world. The plant grows in the wild in rocky and sandy areas, but is now also frequently planted in gardens and parks.
Characteristics
The Opuntia jamaicensis 'Ghost' is known for its special physical characteristics. The cactus has an upright growth habit, consisting of flat, oval green leafless segments joined together. The spines of this cactus are fine, white and can be up to 4cm long. During the flowering period, usually in the late spring and early summer, the plant develops bright yellow to orange flowers that stand out against the pale green of the plant.
Care
Caring for the Opuntia jamaicensis 'Ghost' is relatively straightforward. The plant is very drought-tolerant and requires little water, making it well adapted to any environment with sufficient sunlight. The plant tolerates full sunlight well and can also grow in semi-shade, but has fewer flowers then. The ideal temperatures for this cactus are between 25 and 30°C, but the plant can also survive lower temperatures if they do not last too long. When repotting, it is important to use a sufficiently deep planter, as the plant has a deep root system.
