Origin
The Opuntia seminermis, also known as the blanket fig cactus, originally comes from Mexico, where it grows in dry areas. In this region, it is mainly appreciated for its resilience to drought and its ability to thrive on rocky soil. It can also be found in parts of the southwestern United States.
Characteristics
The Opuntia seminermis is a succulent known for its flat, oval to round pads covered with thin, small spines. The plant blooms in late spring to early summer with yellow flowers, followed by bright red, edible fruits. The Opuntia seminermis can reach a height of about 60 centimetres and has the unique characteristic of being highly weather-resistant, especially against high temperatures.
Care
When caring for the Opuntia seminermis, it's important to take into account its preference for sunny locations and well-draining soil, as it is a succulent that tolerates dry conditions. Excess water should be avoided, as the plant is prone to root rot. Fertilisation can take place once a year with a cactus and succulent mixture. The plant can be pruned all year round, but it is important to be careful with the spines.
