Origin
The Opuntia microdasys var. pallida, also known as the Bunny Ears cactus, originates in Mexico. The plant grows in the wild in the desert areas of the country, where it can withstand extreme temperatures and drought. This species is part of the cactus family Cactaceae, which includes over 1300 species. Over time, the Opuntia microdasys var. pallida has found its way to other parts of the world, including home and garden environments.

Characteristics
The Opuntia microdasys var. pallida is recognisable by its flat, oval leaves, which are covered with white, prickly hairs. These hairs, also called glochids, are characteristic of the Opuntia species and can be very irritating to the skin. The cactus can grow up to 60 cm high, which is relatively small for a cactus. In the late spring and early summer, the plant blooms, producing yellow flowers that provide a stark contrast to the predominantly green colour of the plant.

Care
The care of the Opuntia microdasys var. pallida, requires a number of specific measures to keep the plant healthy. Like other cacti, this species requires a lot of light, but also some protection from the intensity peaks of the midday sun. The plant needs well-draining soil, such as a soil mix specially made for cacti, to prevent root rot. Water should be given sparingly, especially in the winter months when the plant only needs water every few weeks. It is recommended to fertilise the plant in the spring for optimal growth.
