Origin
The Opuntia consulea, also better known as the 'prickly pear', originates from the hot desert climate of North America. It is a cactus species native to Mexico and naturally occurs in the Southwestern United States. The desert climate in which this plant naturally thrives, has resulted in a plant species with a high tolerance for drought.

Characteristics
The Opuntia consulea is an evergreen, woody succulent that can grow up to a height of 2 metres. The cactus has a branched growth habit, with characteristic oval, flat, highly spiny segments. In spring and summer, the plant produces yellow flowers that later in the season mature into edible, red fruits. The plant can survive temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius.

Care
The Opuntia consulea has minimal care needs. The plant has a strong preference for well-draining soil and a sunny location. Watering is done sparingly: only when the ground is completely dried out does the plant get water again, as overwatering can lead to root rot. During the winter months, the plant's water supply is reduced as the plant is in its rest period. Pruning is not necessary but can be done for aesthetic reasons or to limit growth.
