Origin
The Opuntia erinacea, also known as the Grizzly Bear cactus, is a type of cactus native to the desert regions of the southwestern United States and northwest Mexico. This cactus is found on dry, rocky slopes and gravelly desert plains up to an elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level. It is an important component of the Mojave and Sonora desert's flora.

Characteristics
The Opuntia erinacea is a shrub-like cactus that can grow up to one and a half metres tall. It has flattened stems (pads) strewn with clusters of spines, which lends it the name Grizzly Bear cactus. This plant produces vibrant, blooming flowers in the springtime, usually in shades of yellow, pink or red. The fruits are oval to elongated and vary in colour from green to purple.

Care
The Opuntia erinacea has a strong preference for sunny locations and well-draining soil. It is very drought tolerant and requires minimal irrigation. During the summer months, it is advisable to only water the plant once a month. In the winter, at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, almost all watering should be stopped to prevent root rot. Although it can handle cold temperatures well, it performs optimally at temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius.
