Origin
The Opuntia macrocentra Negra is a cactus species native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The plant is mainly found in these areas where it grows in dry, rocky and sandy environments. This cactus is also known as the Black Spine Prickly Pear.
Characteristics
The Opuntia macrocentra Negra is a compact, strongly branched cactus that can grow up to 60 cm tall. The plant has noticeable dark purple to nearly black spines, hence the name 'Negra'. The cactus produces large flowers in late spring or early summer, which are yellow with a red base. The fruits of the cactus are red and contain numerous seeds.
Care
The Opuntia macrocentra Negra requires minimal care and is exceptionally resistant to drought, making it well-suited for xeriscaping. The plant loves full sun and needs well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Although the cactus can tolerate cold well, it is better to protect it from heavy frost. When repotting, one should be careful to prevent injury from the sharp spines.
