Origin
The Epiphyllum anguliger, also known as the fishbone cactus, originates from the warm and humid forests of Central and South America. It is primarily found in the rainforests of Mexico, in the vicinity of coastlines and river banks.
Characteristics
The Epiphyllum anguliger is distinct due to its unusual leaves, which resemble fishbones. The plant typically has soft, flat and green branches that grow alternately on both sides. During the flowering phase, usually in the autumn, the plant produces star-shaped flowers with an enticing aroma, which tend to bloom at night.
Care
The Epiphyllum anguliger prefers indirect sunlight and thrives in a warm environment with high humidity levels. Water should be given sparingly, but it is important not to let the soil dry out completely between watering. The plant does well with a standard potting soil mix supplemented with coarse sand or perlite for better drainage. The plant should be moved or repotted with care to avoid damaging the fragile branches. Annual fertilising during the growing season is recommended for healthy growth.
