Origin
The Echeveria electra, known commonly as 'Waltzing Mathilda', has its origin in the mountainous regions of Central and South America. This species belongs to the Crassulaceae family, a large plant family with approximately 34 genera and 1400 species. The plant owes its Latin name to the 18th century botanist, Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy.
Characteristics
The Echeveria electra is a succulent with compact rosettes. The leaves are fleshy and have a green to light pink colour. These can moreover become more intense in colour if they are exposed to sufficient sunlight. If the plant has optimal conditions, it blooms with orange-red flowers on top of long, slender stems.
Care
Caring for the Echeveria electra is generally quite simple. The plant prefers well-drained soil and a sunny to semi-shady location. Watering is only occasionally necessary, with drying out between waterings necessary to prevent root rot. During the winter months, the plant should be kept indoors to avoid freezing.
