Origin
The Dracaena fragrans 'Compacta', also known as the dragon plant, has its origin in Africa. Additionally, this unique plant species can also be found in South Asia and Central America. It's a family of houseplants renowned for their air-purifying effects, a quality that makes them very popular for indoor planting.
Characteristics
The 'Compacta' is a variant of the Dracaena fragrans which stands out for its compact and slow growth. It has shiny, green leaves that grow tightly in a spiral around the stem. The plant can reach a maximum height between 50 and 120 cm, depending on the care and conditions in which it is cultivated. In ideal conditions the 'Compacta' may flower with small, fragrant blossoms, although this rarely occurs indoors.
Care
Given its original conditions, the Dracaena fragrans 'Compacta' is used to shadowy places so it thrives best in semi-shade to indirect sunlight. It requires minimal watering, especially in the winter months, to prevent root rot. The plant doesn’t need a large water reservoir and the soil may dry out slightly between watering. It is suggested to repot the 'Compacta' every two years to stimulate optimal growth.
