Origin
Dracaena draco is a plant species native to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira and parts of western Morocco. It is a striking feature in the landscape of these regions, where it has acquired iconic status. Traditionally, Dracaena draco has been valued for its unique appearance and the red resin that flows from the trunk when the plant is wounded. The species mainly grows in subtropical climate zones and prefers a rocky substrate.

Characteristics
Dracaena draco is a slow-growing, tree-like plant that can reach a height of 10–12 metres. Notable are its thick, branched trunk and dense canopy made up of sword-shaped, grey-green leaves. The growth habit is umbrella-like, with clusters of leaves at the ends of the branches. Older specimens develop aerial roots and may form multiple trunks due to branching after flowering. The plant produces small, whitish-green flowers which later turn into orange berries.

Care
Dracaena draco requires well-draining, dry to slightly moist soil. The species is drought tolerant and only needs moderate watering. It grows best in a bright location with plenty of sunlight. In temperate climates, Dracaena draco can be kept as a pot plant indoors; outdoors, protection from frost is essential. The plant thrives best at temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius.
