Origin
The Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey', also known as the 'Audrey' Banyan Tree, is native to India and Pakistan. In its natural habitat, it can reach gigantic dimensions and is a highly respected and protected plant. This impressive tree is recognised as the national tree of India.
Characteristics
The Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' is an evergreen tree known for its wide, sprawling canopy of dense leaves. The leaves are large, leathery and glossy with a deep green colour that beautifully contrasts with the light grey to pink bark. The 'Audrey' has a striking aerial root structure, which contributes to the overall shape and appeal of the plant. This plant does not produce flowers.
Care
For optimal growth, the Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' needs bright, indirect light, but can also adapt to lighter and darker conditions. Regular watering is important, but the plant should never be left standing in water. Allow the top layer of the soil to dry between watering. The 'Audrey' enjoys high humidity, so misting the leaves with water can be beneficial, as well as placing the plant near a humidifier. It is also important to repot the plant once the roots start growing out of the drainage hole.
