Origin
The Ficus lyrata, better known as the fiddle-leaf fig, has its origin in the tropical regions of West Africa. Here, the plant grows in lowland rainforests, stretching from Cameroon to the west coast of Sierra Leone.
Characteristics
The Ficus lyrata is a unique species within the Ficus family, characterised by its large, glossy leaves, which resemble a violin in shape. Under ideal circumstances, the Ficus lyrata can grow into a large tree, however indoors it usually remains smaller than two metres. The plant has a peculiar way of growing, new leaves unfurl from a rolled-up structure at the top of the plant.
Care
The care of the Ficus lyrata requires a constant, warm temperature and moist soil, but the plant cannot tolerate too much water. It is important that the plant gets light, but no direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves. Similar to its natural environment, the Ficus lyrata has high demands for humidity – this should not be too low. The plant doesn't need a lot of fertiliser, usually fertilising once in the growing season is sufficient. It is also recommended to regularly check the plant for diseases and pests.
