Ficus rubiginosa 'Australis'
Stem
4FIAURS87
Origin
The Ficus benghalensis, also known as the Indian rubber tree, originates in India, but is also found in the tropical regions from China to Australia. This species belongs to the mulberry family (Moraceae) and is a large, majestic tree in its natural environment, often appreciated for its impressive growth and cultural significance in Hindu religion.
Characteristics
The Ficus benghalensis is known for its striking and complex root system. The tree often starts its life as an epiphyte on another tree, but forms eroded roots towards the ground. As soon as they reach the ground, they thicken and transform into additional 'trunks', where the tree can gradually suffocate its host. In addition, the tree has glossy, elliptical and leathery leaves, which are usually between 10 and 20 cm long.
Care
The Ficus benghalensis requires careful and specific care. As this plant naturally grows in the tropics, it benefits from bright, diffused light and evenly warm temperatures. Excessive watering is not necessary, but the soil should not dry out. During the winter months, the plant goes into dormancy and less water is needed. Additionally, the plant occasionally needs to be wiped down with a damp cloth to remove dust from the leaves and maintain the respiratory capacity.
