Origin
Ficus benghalensis is a tropical tree species native to India and Sri Lanka. This plant naturally grows in humid, warm areas. In the wild, the species forms extensive forests and canopies because its roots are able to spread widely. The tree is often seen in temple gardens and near sacred sites.

Characteristics
Ficus benghalensis belongs to the Moraceae family and is commonly known as the banyan in English. The plant develops large, oval leaves with a glossy green upper side. A distinctive characteristic is the presence of aerial roots; these grow downwards from the branches and develop into additional trunks. In nature, this species can become very large and cover a broad area. The bark is grey-brown and smooth in texture.

Care
A spot with plenty of light ensures optimal growth. The plant requires a constant temperature and high humidity. Regular watering is essential, especially as a pot plant. Ficus benghalensis does not tolerate prolonged drought. Fertilising can contribute to healthy development.
